When it comes to music, I feel that the key element is the voice. Absolutely. You can have the best guitar riffs and still come way short in the music world if the lead vocals sucks (A Day Away, need I say more?) And this is the reason why I love this band.
Empires rock for two reasons. One: they have a 70s guitar sound but still keep a modern edge, and two: their album is free. I don't even feel remotely bad about putting it up here.
Seriously, these guys are good. The Chicago-based band recorded their debut album all by themselves (which deserves some respect) and it has a really nice flow. Some songs are just so deep, so full of volume. I don't know. I can't explain it. Just listen to the first song, "Spit The Dark". And then some songs should be instant radio hits. When I first heard "Midnight Land", I was shocked that it wasn't rocking the airwaves.
Don't get me wrong, though. Some tunes don't pull their weight. "Modern Love" sounds too, uhh, not good. Same with "Late Night Rendezvous". But everything else is solid. A nice mix of electric guitar and acoustic guitar songs, too.
Tell me what you think, guys! I need some input so I know what kinds of bands you like and/or didn't know prior to seeing them here. I want to help you find good music!
